Help in Rebuilding Aku: Restoring Hope and Resilience in a Forgotten Community
Over the past three years, Aku community in Okigwe LGA, Imo State has been reduced to ashes, caught in the crossfire of terror and military raids. Over 105 homes were burned, families displaced, and countless lives lost, mostly youths and the elderly. Today, the heart of Aku is silent, scarred, and scattered. Entire generations are missing. Elders above 65 are now rare, either taken by violence or buried in fear.
The area has faced significant challenges in recent years due to security concerns. In December 2024, a joint security task force known as Operation Udoka conducted a clearance operation in Aku, targeting camps allegedly operated by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). During the operation, security forces discovered shallow graves believed to contain victims of the group’s activities, and recovered stolen vehicles, arms, ammunition, and explosive devices .
The community had reportedly been under the control of a suspected IPOB leader, Ifeanyi Okorienta, also known as “Gentle,” for an extended period. His group was accused of terrorizing residents, leading to the destruction of schools and places of worship, and causing many inhabitants to flee their homes .
The ongoing insecurity has significantly disrupted daily life in Aku, affecting social structures and leading to infrastructural decay .
The once-thriving village is now a memory in ruins, with mothers sleeping in cold shelters, children out of school, and youth without hope.
